Neelum Valley Travel Guide: Keran, Sharda, Arang Kel & Best Time to Visit
October 8, 2026 · 7 min read
Neelum Valley in Azad Kashmir is one of Pakistan's most beautiful river valleys. Here is where to stay, what to see, and how to plan Keran, Sharda and Arang Kel.
A Quieter Alternative to the Crowded North
Neelum Valley in Azad Kashmir follows the Neelum River through dense pine forest, waterfalls and small villages. It is less crowded than Murree or Naran and combines lush scenery with easy access from Islamabad, which is why it has become one of the most requested short getaways.
Getting to Neelum Valley
Neelum starts after Muzaffarabad and continues up the river valley through Athmuqam, Sharda and Keran. From Islamabad, expect a long driving day to reach the upper valley, and plan for a night in Muzaffarabad or inside the valley. Roads can be affected by landslides after heavy rain, so keep your schedule flexible.
Top Places in Neelum Valley
Most trips follow the river and stay in one or two bases.
- Keran: a riverside village with views of the Neelum River and the opposite bank
- Sharda: known for its ancient ruins and a calmer atmosphere
- Kel and Arang Kel: a chairlift ride and short hike takes you to a high alpine village famous for its meadows
- Ratti Gali Lake: a more adventurous trek for experienced hikers
- Neelum riverside cafes: easy places to sit and watch the water
Best Time to Visit
Neelum Valley is attractive from April to October. Summer (June to August) is the main season for Arang Kel and the higher areas, while autumn brings golden colors. Winter can bring heavy snow and difficult road access in the upper valley.
How Many Days to Plan
Three to four days is a good balance for Keran, Sharda and a day for Arang Kel. Add one more day if you want a relaxed pace or a short trek. Weekend trips are possible, but you will spend much of the time on the road.
