Ratti Gali Lake is the most-searched trek in Azad Kashmir right now. Here is how to reach this turquoise glacial lake above Neelum Valley, the trek difficulty and the best season to go.

One of the Most Photographed Lakes in Azad Kashmir

Ratti Gali Lake is an alpine glacial lake sitting at roughly 3,700 meters in Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir, fed directly by surrounding glacier meltwater. Its vivid turquoise color against snow patches and green meadows has made it one of the most-searched trekking destinations in Pakistan over the past two summers.

How to Reach Ratti Gali Lake

The trek begins from Dowarian village on the main Neelum Valley road. From Dowarian, a jeep can cover part of the route to a base point, after which it is roughly a 3-4 hour hike (or horse ride, which many travelers prefer at this altitude) to reach the lake itself.

  • Starting point: Dowarian village, Neelum Valley
  • Trek distance: approximately 19 km round trip from the road, shorter if using a jeep for part of the route
  • Difficulty: moderate, mainly due to altitude rather than technical terrain
  • Alternative: horses are available for travelers who prefer not to hike the full distance

Best Time to Visit

June to September is the only realistic window, as the lake and surrounding trail are snow-covered for most of the rest of the year. July and August offer the clearest trail conditions and the greenest meadows around the lake.

Planning Your Trip

Ratti Gali Lake is usually visited as part of a longer Neelum Valley trip, combined with stops at Keran and Arang Kel. Because of the altitude and trek length, it is best attempted as a day trip from a Neelum Valley base rather than rushed on the way through. The Trekkers Pakistan can arrange jeep transport to Dowarian and a guide for the trek as part of a Neelum Valley itinerary.
