Kumrat Valley: Pakistan's Rising Star Destination (2026 Guide)
June 19, 2026 · 5 min read
Kumrat Valley is one of the fastest-growing trending destinations in Northern Pakistan. Here is everything you need to know about this dense-forest valley in Upper Dir before you go.
Why Everyone Is Talking About Kumrat Valley
Kumrat Valley, tucked away in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has exploded in popularity over the last few seasons as travelers look for greener, less crowded alternatives to Hunza and Skardu. Dense pine and deodar forests, the fast-flowing Panjkora River and snow-capped peaks make it feel like a different country altogether.
Top Attractions in Kumrat Valley
Kumrat is compact compared to Hunza or Skardu, but every stop along the valley is scenic enough to justify a slow-paced visit.
- Jahaz Banda Meadow: a grassy plateau reached by jeep and a short hike, often called the highlight of Kumrat
- Panjkora River: turquoise glacial water running through the entire valley, popular for riverside camping
- Katora Lake: a higher-altitude lake trek for more adventurous travelers
- Thall Bazaar: the gateway town where most jeep treks into the valley begin
How to Reach Kumrat Valley
Kumrat Valley is reached via Thall, in Upper Dir, roughly a 7-8 hour drive from Islamabad or Lahore via Swat. From Thall, a 4x4 jeep is required to continue into the valley itself, as the unpaved tracks are not suitable for regular cars, especially after rain.
Best Time to Visit
May to September is the ideal window. Late spring brings high water levels in the Panjkora River and lush green forest, while September offers cooler, clearer days. Roads can be difficult or closed in winter due to snow.
Planning Tips
Camping is the most popular way to experience Kumrat, with several riverside camps now operating near Thall and inside the valley. The Trekkers Pakistan can combine a Kumrat Valley trip with our Swat Valley tour package, since both regions are reached via the same route through Mingora and Kalam.
