Deosai is one of the highest plateaus on earth. This guide covers the best time to visit, how to reach it from Skardu, what to see and what to pack for the Land of Giants.

What Makes Deosai Special

Deosai National Park, locally called the Land of Giants, is a vast high-altitude plateau near Skardu sitting at an average height of over 4,000 meters. It is often listed among the highest plateaus in the world, and its rolling treeless landscape feels closer to the Tibetan plateau than to anywhere else in Pakistan.

In summer the plains turn green and fill with wildflowers, the sky seems enormous, and the Himalayan brown bear, one of the park's protected residents, roams the grasslands.

Best Time to Visit Deosai

Deosai is only accessible in the warmer months because heavy snow closes the plateau for much of the year. Plan your visit between roughly June and September, with July and August offering the best wildflower displays. Always confirm current road conditions before you go, since early and late season weather can be unpredictable.

How to Reach Deosai from Skardu

Deosai is a full-day excursion from Skardu town. The drive passes through Sadpara village and Sadpara Lake before the road climbs onto the plateau. The track is rough in places, so a 4x4 jeep with an experienced driver is strongly recommended. Start early so you have enough daylight to reach the far side and return before dark.

Top Things to See and Do

Allow time to simply stop and take it in. The highlights usually include:

  • Sheosar Lake: a deep blue alpine lake and the most famous viewpoint on the plateau
  • Bara Pani: a wide plain where several streams meet, popular for photography
  • Sadpara Lake: a scenic stop on the way up from Skardu
  • Wildlife spotting: Himalayan brown bear, marmots and many bird species, best seen quietly and at a distance
  • Stargazing: the altitude and absence of light pollution make for spectacular night skies if you camp

Altitude, Weather and What to Pack

Even in July the temperature on the plateau can feel cold, particularly in wind or after sunset. Bring a windproof jacket, warm layers, a hat and gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water and snacks since facilities are minimal. Take it slow if you feel dizzy or breathless, as the altitude can affect some travelers.
